Composite Decking FAQ
What is composite decking?
Composite decking is an engineered deck material made up of natural wood fibers and recycled plastics. Some brands use mineral based fibers in addition to wood fibers or recycled plastics. This makes composite decking lighter weight and easier to install than traditional hardwood decks.
Why choose composite decking?
Over the last 30 years composite decking has been developed to create a superior decking product. When it first came into production in the early 90’s it wasn’t uncommon for it to chip, splinter or fade. The composite decking in production now has been carefully engineered to withstand the rigors of various climates including our dynamic Colorado weather. Many composite decking companies now offer a 25-35 year warranty on their products when installed by a certified professional.
In addition to being durable and coming with a manufacturer warranty there are plenty of other reasons to choose composite decking. For instance, composite decking comes in a wide array of colors, textures and grades. Making it a great choice if you want a product that is highly customizable. The consistency in this type of product can result in true works of art. View our gallery for inspiration and examples of our work at Bespoke Decks.
Because it is lightweight and easy to install, projects using composite decking can be completed relatively quickly. Manufacturer warranties help guarantee you are making a good investment. The color, texture and grade options really open up endless combinations and customization. Overall there is minimal maintenance meaning you can enjoy your deck with little to no hassle. Composite decking is a great choice for increasing the value of your home.
How do you maintain composite decking?
Because it is engineered to be long standing there isn’t much in the way of composite deck maintenance. We recommend keeping your composite deck clear of dirt and debris by sweeping it regularly. Spraying it with a low pressure hose can achieve this as well. Aside from that your composite deck shouldn’t need much attention. Additionally, we recommend lifting and placing heavy furniture as opposed to sliding it across the deck boards. This helps reduce the risk of scuffs, scraps or gauges.
Living in Colorado we often get asked, “How do you remove snow from a composite deck?” The answer is simple, use a broom to sweep the snow off your deck. You can use a leaf blower to get the same effect. You can also use a snow shovel if you’re able to do so with light pressure to assure you don’t scrap the deck boards. When using a shovel we recommend going with the grain of your deck.
Overall the care and upkeep of a composite deck is minimal. When installed by a certified professional you can enjoy the peace of mind that your deck will last you years. Increasing the value of your home and giving you the opportunity to enjoy all the beauty that Colorado has to offer.
