Ipe Deck FAQ

What is Ipe?

Ipe is a hardwood, also known as Brazilian Walnut, native to central and south america. It is revered by professionals for its beauty and extreme durability. In fact, its strength is often compared to that of concrete. Which makes it a great choice if you’re looking for a material that will withstand years and years of Colorado weather and sunshine.

How do you maintain an Ipe Deck?

Regular maintenance is very minimal. Ipe decking should be swept and kept clear of debris such as leaves, sticks and dirt. This can be addressed on a weekly, biweekly or even on a once a month basis. How often you choose to tidy up your deck will depend on the wear your deck receives and the time of year.

Additionally, whether or not you choose to oil your deck will impact the maintenance required. If you choose to go with an oiled ipe deck it is recommended that you reapply oil once or twice a year. This is done with Ipe Oil that can be found at most local hardware stores. Some clients prefer to leave their ipe decks natural and allow the wood to gradually develop a silver and gray color. While others choose to have their ipe decking oiled. Oiling not only brings the color of the wood to life (red, orange, amber and gold streaks) but it also extends the life of your deck.

Whether you choose to oil your ipe decking or leave it natural, a little routine maintenance can go a long way. It can be beneficial to rinse off the decking with a low pressure hose occasionally. We do not recommend sanding or power washing ipe decking.

Why Choose an Ipe Deck?

Ipe decking is a popular choice when it comes to hardwood decks for several reasons. For one it is truly unique in terms of color and pattern, there is nothing engineered like it. In addition to its beauty it is known for how well it holds up to the daily demands of our Colorado climate. An ipe deck, when properly maintained, can last up to 75 years. Which makes it a fantastic choice for your forever home.

How is Ipe Decking installed?

When it comes to installation, ipe decking requires a knowledgeable and skilled craftsman. Unlike engineered decking, ipe requires additional prep and labor throughout the installation process. It’s weight is more per square inch than an engineered decking, making it heavier and harder to move, which quickly adds up during the loading and unloading process. Because it is such a dense hardwood, holes need to be predrilled to avoid breaking screws and hardware. Every cut section, or end, needs to be properly sealed to avoid unnecessary exposure to moisture. When installed properly you can enjoy your deck for years to come.
